Athletic Performance for Life is a groundbreaking new youth program developed by the Think Big Foundation to provide the necessary education, mentorship, and physical fitness training in order to ensure that each and every student-athlete is given the tools they need to be successful on the field of play, in the classroom, and in life.  The Athletic Performance for Life Program is focused on empowering the youth to reach their true athletic and academic potential and aims to offer opportunities for physical and mental enrichment and growth to those who want to be their best. An eight week curriculum centered on educating student-athletes in all areas of human performance including: anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports nutrition will be integrated with a strength and conditioning program that will improve athleticism and prevent injuries. Along with mentorship and guidance from various professional athletes and speakers, the program will strive to prepare athletes for the challenges they will face throughout their athletic and academic careers and ensure they have the resources needed to overcome challenges and adversity and reach their true potential.

The Athletic Performance for Life Program’s goal is to create a program aimed at instructing youth in the areas surrounding sports and athletics to better prepare them for the challenges they may face throughout their academic and athletic careers. More specifically, to guide them through physical and mental exercises to enhance kinesthetic awareness, athletic development, physical fitness, knowledge about sports management, time-management & punctuality, leadership skills, responsibility, self-discipline, self-confidence, and a value on nutritional well-being.

Program Specific Goals:

THINK BIG FOUNDATION'S YOUNG WRITER'S FORUM

The Young Writers Forum is a literacy, journalism and communications program which is centered around the creation and circulation of a youth urban arts and culture magazine.  The magazine will be a publication for youth as well adults in the community, but will be collaborated and written by the youth participants.

The purpose of the publication is to provide opportunities for youth both to share their experiences in and around other arts programs in the city, and to have the chance to publish articles on important issues in the community around urban culture.  It will offer an informative approach at reaching out to young people while being truthful and positive with a pop appeal.

The magazine, called BRICK (By Real Inner City Kids) will include information regarding media literacy to create awareness about the current state of the mainstream media and how young people are being targeted and exploited.  It will feature articles on hip-hop culture in Seattle, spoken-word artists, explore the urban dance scene, and take an in-depth look at the artistic works of youth from local non-profits.

This will not only be an amazing experience for youth to learn about publishing and journalism but it may be used as a portfolio piece for college applications and will also offer the community at large a look at the invaluable experience that so many young people receive though being a part of artistic programs.  It will give kids the opportunity to highlight young talent and scholars or any young people in the city who have shown exceptional performance in arts, athletics or academics.  The Publication will also contain a calendar of events, along with other resources such as scholarships, information regarding college preparation, and youth employment opportunities and internships.

Program Specific Goals:

  • Encourage continued and successful participation in arts, music and communication programs
  • Provide educational opportunities to students in the areas of journalism, communication, photography, and creative writing
  • Empower the youth to reach their artistic and academic potential
  • Provide strong mentorship, leadership, and guidance for kids who have an interest in urban culture
  • Increase awareness within the community of the benefits of arts programs
  • Prepare students for success in college

THE THINK BIG FOUNDATION'S LIFE COACHING & MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The Life Coaching and Mentorship Program is an innovative new youth program developed by the Think Big Foundation to provide education, direction, and mentorship to young people with a variety of interests ranging from the arts to athletics.  The program aims to unite successful individuals in our community with a young person to offer their continued guidance and support through their shared interests and their specific experiences.  The foundation wishes to provide a helpful platform of strategies to help enhance values that we feel are essential for success.  These include time-management & punctuality, goal-setting skills, leadership skills, responsibility, self-discipline, self-confidence, and a value on nutritional well-being.  We also aim to assist with them with their academic endeavors, not by tutoring, but by providing resources as well as learning techniques that may help their academic achievement.  We wish to use this platform as an assessment tool for effectiveness of the program, and to use as general guidelines for the program.  We especially want to emphasize the relationship of our mentors with the youth, and encourage them to add their own educational ‘coaching’ if desired.  The Life Coaching Program is also designed to enrich the educational experiences of our mentors, and will hopefully help them see their potential as educators and healers within the community.

Program Specific Goals:

  • Encourage continued and successful participation in scholastic sports programs, arts programs, and music programs that augment holistic education
  • Empower the youth to develop and reach their athletic, artistic and academic aspirations
  • Prepare student athletes for success in high school athletics and academics
  • Improve fundamental life skills such as leadership, time-management, teamwork, organization, dedication, etc.
  • Increase awareness and community activism
